This set of links is designed to assist in solving computer problems, by acting as a reference point further information.
Note that some of the files mentioned on this page may need the StuffIt Expander decompression utility to extract the application from the archive file. (It may already be on your machine.)
- Software Updates can be useful to avoid conflicts with newer versions of the operating system, or perhaps to fix a bug found since software was released. The Apple Software updates page will assist you to find the one you want. However if you have a pre-G3 computer you will need to get your older software from the legacy software page
- Apple has the Support page with keyword searching where you can locate many solutions
- Another site with detailed information about many other aspects of your Mac can be found on Apple’s Apple Spec Database.. A search can provide details for for any Macintosh ever made
- If you’re looking to upgrade or service your computer in some way Apple has Web based information available to show where and how to arrange this
- Should you be looking for information on older Macintosh models there is a wealth of information at Lowendmac.com
- If on the other hand you are seeking a lost manual for your Macintosh computer or other Apple peripherial, you could always visit the Apple Web site to request the specific one you want, then download a PDF file to keep on your computer
- Bellarine MUG’s troubleshooting guide may have the answer to your problem. It’s a 1.4MB PDF from the BMUG Troubleshooting page. (There are other useful documents elsewhere on the site)
- But if none of the information above has been useful you could try looking a the Apple site index to point you in the right direction
What version?
This information is essential for troubleshooting.
Mac OS X
To find the version number of OS X, choose ‘About This Mac’ from the Apple menu at top left. Click the ‘More Info...’ button for details of the machine: processor, memory, hard disk, etc.

To find the version number of application software, choose ‘About XXX’ (AppleWorks in this example) from the application’s menu, next to the Apple menu.
Mac OS 9 and earlier
For the version number of the operating system, have the Finder active, and choose ‘About This Mac’ from the Apple menu at top left. For details of the machine (processor, memory, hard drive, etc) choose ‘Apple System Profiler’
Details of applications are to be found from ‘About XXX’ (SimpleText in this example) on the Apple menu when the application is active
