Set up a folder for receiving downloads through the Preferences dialog of your browser:

Safari
General pane
 
Firefox
Downloads pane
 
Internet Explorer
Download options pane of Receiving files section

To download a file:

Safari
Hold down the Control key and click the link. Select Download Linked File from the menu
 
Firefox
Hold the mouse button down over the link, and select Save Link As... from the menu
 
Internet Explorer
Hold the mouse button down over the link, and select Download Link to Disk from the menu
